The extended Hagen family gathered together in August 2016 to celebrate Grandma’s birthday. We stayed in 3 double condo units in a relaxing beach resort on Kanapali Beach north of Lahaina on Maui.
The beach town of Lahaina in western Maui was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a place where kings were born. It later became a key port at the height of the 19th-century whaling boom.
Though it transformed into a mostly tourist area in the 1960s, much of Lahaina’s history can still be found sprinkled around town—including in the roots of a giant banyan tree.
Situated on the Kanapali coast, Lahaina was known in ancient Hawaiian times as “Lele”, meaning ‘cruel sun’. It was conquered by Kamehameha the Great in 1795.
We lounged, cruised, surfed and beached most of the day, but drifted into town for excitement by night, always near the large banyan. It was planted in 1873, and is a 60-foot mammoth covering nearly an acre.
We participated in the traditional Luau, including Tess and Jordy dancing on stage with the cast. We chartered a Catamaran for the intoxicating Sunset Cruise. Buff, Joe and Carolyn took a ferry boat to Molokai. Jordy and Tessa did some first-class surfing, Jordy and Jeff did some Snuba Diving, and the Hagens braved the scenic but treacherous road to Hana.
Grandma especially enjoyed her special birthday celebration. All in all, A Very Memorable Trip For Everyone!!
